Some of our best advice to get you started
What To Wear
- Solids and subtle patterns tend to photograph better than heavily patterned or striped clothing.
- Large, funky patterns or graphics can be fun for something different but not for every shot. And no text or large logos please!
- Bring a variety of colors to choose from.
- Bring some dressy and some casual outfits.
- Plan the whole outfit, don’t forget the shoes!

Weather & Your Session
Weather is one of the most common questions we receive!
The good news is that a beautiful portrait session does not require bright sunshine. In fact, many of our favorite images are created on lightly overcast days. Soft clouds act like a giant natural diffuser, creating flattering light and rich colors without harsh shadows.
Because forecasts can change dramatically throughout the day, we typically make the final weather decision just a few hours before your session. This allows us to make the best decision based on the most accurate forecast rather than predictions made days in advance.
We’ll happily photograph in:
- Bright sunshine
- Light or heavy overcast
- Passing clouds
- Calm, misty weather
We’ll typically reschedule for:
- Steady rain
- Thunderstorms or lightning
- High winds that would make the session unpleasant
- Any weather that would compromise safety or the quality of your experience
If the forecast looks questionable, don’t worry—we’ll be keeping a close eye on it and will reach out if any changes are needed. Unless you hear from us, please plan on your session taking place as scheduled.

Overcast skies act like a natural softbox, creating beautiful, flattering light for portraits without harsh shadows or quinting. Add in our off camera lighting and post processing techniques and it can be gorgeous!
Other Tips
- Most glasses glare. Try removing the lenses from the frames or check with your optometrist to see if they can loan you an empty set of similar frames for your session.
- We retouch blemishes so don’t worry about breakouts!
- Bring props! Sporting equipment, dance outfits and musical instruments are all popular options that tell others something about you.
- Parents are, of course, welcome at the session but they can become a distraction and we highly prefer to work one-on-one with each senior.
