I’m not a woodsy kind of girl. I don’t even particularly love to go camping…not that I’ve ever really “roughed it” in a tent for a significant amount of time in the forest before. But the idea of it all just makes me what to snuggle down into my cozy, clean sheets and relax while watching Netflix and enjoying the AC. Now, that’s my kind of night…
Though for some reason when I’m working, I forget about the dirt, the squishy mud in the shallow ponds, and the creepy crawlies that move about while I click the shutter. All that fear and personal discomfort just seems to fade away. And you know what? I’m OK with that. It’s all for the sake of getting the shots, right?
But do you know who’s not afraid of nature? It’s Miss Madelin, a sweet and gentle beauty who loves spending her time in the water and truly appreciates a peaceful setting in the deep forest. All of the fishing “props” that you will see below in the photos (if you’re not already there and have read this far) are hers. She loves to fish! So this woodsy, watery scene was just her “cup of tea.”
As far as lighting goes, taking photos in the woods are always a challenge. The contrast between the dark shadows of the forest compared to the light of the sun on the subject makes balancing the photo difficult at times. But if you know Joel and I, we’re always up for a challenge! And I’m SO thankful that we use off camera flashes and a reflector. With that being said, we experimented with using the sun versus using our lights as the main light. Some photos have that soft pretty look while others have that dramatic contrast.
Honestly, we are SO pleased with the results and couldn’t have asked for a better gal to work with! I think Maddie’s adventurous spirit must have rubbed off on us that day. Why don’t you see for yourself with the photos below! 😉

Wardrobe: The overalls are one of Maddie’s faves in her closet right now, and they actually were the inspiration for the theme of her barefoot/woodsy shoot! We went a little simpler with accessories for her aside from the real daisies in her hair (thanks Walmart!) and a daisy pressed pendant from Shein.com.
